Daniel is 10 years old and from Surrey. He has been learning piano for just over 4 years and takes on numerous different musical opportunities. Daniel’s teacher had this to say in his reference: “Daniel is a very gifted young musician. He picks up new techniques very quickly and learns how to apply them with ease. He works very hard, and I look forward to seeing what he’ll achieve in the near future.” As well as piano lessons, he performs in the school orchestra and choirs, and also a community choir. During the pandemic he continued to engage in virtual opportunities, successfully entering his grade 2 piano and taking part in the Benedetti Foundation Christmas Concert. We are very much looking forward to hearing how they have got on at the end of the award year. 16 year old Noah from Surrey began playing the French horn when he was 7 years old. As he says: “I went to a ‘Come and Play day’ run by Kingston Music Service. I tried so many instruments! After a while I had narrowed it down to the French horn or the cello. Originally a Physics graduate and an amateur cellist, Marianne took up playing double bass rather later in life. In 2011 she resigned from her career as director of a software consultancy in order to pursue her passion as a double bass player full time, grappling with the physical impossibility of playing a large tree. Soon afterwards she set up Guildford Jazz, a not-for-profit organisation that has to date welcomed over 1500 musicians and 22,000 music lovers and raised over £70,000 for local charities. Marianne also co-runs Fleet Jazz club.. Clive learnt classical clarinet at school and was a passionate “armchair" jazz and classical music fan for many years. He started to learn tenor sax in retirement a few years ago and has been keenly honking away ever since, playing in various small amateur ensembles for fun. Tristan is a keen amateur musician, writing and recording music and playing drums. He works in IT helping charities and other social good organisations leverage technology to achieve their goals. He's been able to spend more time making and promoting music , including valiant efforts to learn piano. Barbara was previously a trustee of the Robert Bouffler Music Trust. She was taught by Robert Bouffler in her formative years and describes his teaching as ‘extraordinary’. Barbara says, ‘I’m so lucky to have had such a rich and varied musical education, enabling my lifelong music-making which continues to enrich my life. She then re-trained and had a further 18 year career as a primary teacher. She feels lucky to have grown up in the South Wales mining valleys where although there wasn’t much money, there were many opportunities to make music. Singing in a variety of choirs and ensembles has been a huge part of her life and CKT values and objectives are very close to her heart. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62a88f76eaa40d270e427a2c/e85724cf-c5f9-42eb-8bc2-45cad2beb8aa/Caroline+Gale.jpeg Meet the Team - Caroline Gale Director of Music and Head of Creative Arts, Guildford County School Caroline Gale studied piano, conducting, accompaniment, repetiteuring and vocal coaching at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She won prizes for her accompanying and conducting which led to a series of masterclasses with prominent musicians such as Sir Simon Rattle, Lyn Harrell, Bryn Terfel and Dame Janet Baker. Since leaving the RAM she worked for a short while at the ENO and as an official accompanist at the RAM. She has performed extensively throughout the UK and in Europe. She is currently Director of Music and Head of Creative Arts at Guildford County School, a specialist Music College where she has built the music provision to include a wide range of co curricular ensembles and choirs. The school has attracted much interest for its peer to peer music teaching strategies, for its work with partner Primary schools and for its 135 strong Boys choir. This choir, in particular has been the focus for appearances on the BBC “Boys Don’t Sing” series, on the Radio 2 series ‘Class Acts’ written and presented by Howard Goodall. They have recently been filmed as part of national resource in partnership with the NYC and they have appeared in regular articles in the national press. The choirs have also recorded for the Sing Up website and Caroline has provided repertoire for the Secondary aspects of this organisation. Caroline is also primary music lead for the Learning Partnership Trust network and is in the Surrey Arts Music steering group.
